Dr Richards is a pioneering advocate for children living with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and complex pain conditions. In 2012 she cofounded The Coalition Against Pediatric Pain (TCAPP), a first of its kind organization supporting families navigating complex pain and other misunderstood pediatric conditions.
Aurora and her daughter, Karen, are featured in the Andrew Abrahams documentary film, Complicated by Open Eye Pictures and share their harrowing healthcare journey in the hope of raising awareness of EDS, the systemic problems in healthcare and human cost of medical disbelief. Aurora has been instrumental in supporting young patients, driving research initiatives, advising healthcare providers and speaking nationally to advance understanding of EDS and it’s multisystem complications.
A practicing veterinarian with training in internal medicine, emergency care, and Fear Free Certification, Aurora brings the same compassion to her animal patients that she champions for medically complex children. She continues to guide and support families while preserving Karen’s legacy through advocacy, education, and storytelling.
